1984年，32歲的李顯龍辭去軍職正式從政。父親李光耀曾百感交集地說：「我本來不曉得他（顯龍）到底有多像我，直到有一天我在電視上觀察他才知道。當時電視裡播映顯龍出席一場記者會，他做了個小動作（把衣袖往肩上拉），與我的動作一模一樣，他還有其他言行舉止和我近似。」在父親慈愛的注視之下，1990年，李顯龍當上了副總理。
李光耀又回憶說：「顯龍一向對政府和國家大事深感興趣。當他還是11歲的小學生時，就陪著我在（新加坡）加入馬來西亞之前的幾個月到選區訪問，爭取人民支持。1964年種族暴亂發生時，他已經12歲了，所以清楚地記得當時騷亂的情形。」
李顯龍曾是英國劍橋大學數學系優秀的學生，但他後來在給導師的一封信中作出了重大抉擇：「現在，讓我說明我不要成為專業數學家的原因。…對於世界變成什麼樣或者國家往什麼方向發展，數學家所能做的實在有限。」李顯龍告訴導師，他將回新加坡更好地為國家服務。李顯龍先在軍中服務，一直做到准將。
1990年11月，李顯龍38歲時，任副總理兼貿易與工業部長，從此展開隔代「儲君」的政治生涯。儘管隔代傳位在台灣的蔣家父子間早已有先例（中間經過嚴家淦總統，任期僅3年），但李光耀卻能夠讓自己的兒子等上13年，可算是頗富心機和耐心的政治家。
李光耀曾說：「我從來不相信一個領袖可以指定他的繼承人，並肯定他會成功。當一個領袖指定他的繼承人時，他所選的人可能不是被選者那一群人中的自然領袖。」要傳位於自己30多歲的兒子，唯一辦法就是找個性格溫和的人來「暖席」，同時將兒子安排在二號人物的位置，獲取閱歷和聲望，再待機扶正。
然而李光耀第一個沒料到的就是，暖席者吳作棟總理幹得非常出色，其親民作風也受到了年輕一代的歡迎。第二個沒料到的是，李顯龍1992年發現罹患淋巴瘤，就擔任國家最高領導人而言，至少是暫時不宜的。就這樣，吳作棟擔任新加坡總理近13年，直到2004年把大位交給李顯龍，李光耀方完成隔代傳位給長子的計畫。新聞影音推薦來源:現代電視
